Many moms and expecting mothers have asked me how to get their husband more engaged in family photos. We get it; not every guy is jumping at the chance to do a family or maternity session, but we promise that it can be enjoyable and even fun! Here are some of our best tips for getting your other half involved and engaged in the process:
Communicate how important the photos are to you: Explain to your spouse why you want to do photos and how important the process is to you. Highlight how the photos will be a memory of a special stage in the life of your family, and show them examples of these types of photos in a portfolio or blog.
Plan things out together: Include him in the outfit choices and allow him to select things he will feel comfortable in. Ask for input in choosing a photographer and his thoughts on what the family is wearing. If he feels invested in the selections, it’s likely that he will be more excited when the day arrives.
Consider an ideal timeline for them: If you are scheduling family photos during a difficult season at their job or a stressful time, they may be less likely to be excited. Consider their schedule and timeline, and choose a time when everyone is well rested and fed. Ask him if he has any concerns that you haven’t thought of.
Show them the results: Once you receive your gallery, share them with your husband and enjoy them together! Allow him to choose his favorite images, and be open to the fact that they may not be the same ones you choose. Ask him how he feels about his own appearance in photos, so that you can choose ones together to display in your home (that you both feel confident about!).
Lead by example: Model enthusiasm by making family or maternity photos stress-free. Have a great attitude yourself and it will help everyone feel more relaxed and remind them that family photos are fun and can even be a wonderful memory you create together.
