We have all had a moment we aren’t proud of as parents, but nothing bring it out more than pressure! Family photos can be a stressful experience, but they don’t have to be. It’s my goal to change that for my clients, and the message is resounding: family photos can be positive AND fun, even for little ones. Family photos can become a treasured memory instead of a dreaded annual event. Here are my best ideas for making family photos something you all look forward to:
-Practice your own attitude first: Stay mindful of the way you speak about and plan your session. Use positive language and speak about it positively to your spouse or children to begin to lay the foundation. Make sure everyone is on board with having photos taken, and explore reasons why little ones might be apprehensive so they feel more confident. For older kids, ask them if they have other things going on and try to find a time that works well for them so they don’t feel resentful and feel more included in the process. While I understand some children are not thrilled about having family photos taken, many warm up when they arrive and end up loving the process.
–Encourage natural and normal interactions: Instead of solely focusing on posed shots, encourage natural interactions among family members. Allow children to explore the surroundings freely and capture candid moments of genuine joy and connection. Emphasize the importance of being themselves and expressing their unique personalities, and don’t pressure them to “perform”. The best photos unfold organically and have more genuine smiles and expressions.
-Celebrate your children’s participation: After your session, plan a fun activity like ice cream or going to the park so they have something to get excited about when they’re done. Let them know how thankful you are that they participated, and show them the portraits when they are ready in the gallery. Let them choose a favorite or two to display in their room or playroom, to help associate fond memories with the experience! Many children love a snapshot or two that they can put in their school bags or hang up in their rooms.
