If you’ve browsed Tik Tok or Instagram for any length of time lately, you’ve probably seen the organization videos all about de-cluttering. You may also be wondering how on earth to achieve that with little ones at home. After all, the sheer amount of preschool artwork, baby toys and gear, or outgrown hand-me-downs may be overwhelming and leave you wondering where to begin. Here are some of our latest tips for helping you on a simpler, easier journey to organization:
First off, let’s talk storage. You need designated spots for all those toys, clothes, and random stuff. Get yourself some bins, baskets, and shelves to sort everything out; these don’t have to be expensive. Your local dollar store has plenty of inexpensive options. Oh, and don’t forget to label them so everyone knows where stuff goes. And of course, get the kids involved in cleaning up too. It’s never too early to teach them to pitch in, and it helps them feel invested.
Next, try the “one in, one out” rule. Every time something new comes in, say a toy or whatever, try to get rid of something similar that’s not getting much love anymore. It helps keep the clutter from taking over and teaches the kids about being mindful of what they have. Although it may be hard to for them to part with some toys, it will also make them think twice before bringing in more toys that they don’t love or want.
Regular decluttering sessions are your friend. Set aside some time every month to go through stuff and toss or donate what you don’t need anymore. Outgrown clothes, broken toys, you name it – if it’s not being used, it’s gotta go.
Think smart with your furniture too. Look for pieces that do double duty, like ottomans with storage space or beds with drawers underneath. And hey, get creative with your walls! Shelves are your best friend when it comes to displaying toys or books without taking up floor space. One good way to do this is to keep a donation bin in your laundry room or closet where you can immediately stick things that you’re ready to part with. Once a month, sort the bin into donation or consignment type items.
Lastly, make cleaning a part of your daily routine. Just a few minutes each day to tidy up can make a huge difference. Many experts recommend setting a 15 minute timer each night for a “family clean up” that can make a big impact…it’s a team effort, after all. So there you have it, some practical tips to keep the chaos at bay and your home somewhat organized. You got this, mom!
