When it comes to planning a mini session, I know what you’re thinking: “Is it even possible to get good photos in just 15 minutes?” The answer? Absolutely.

Mini sessions are designed to be quick, fun, and stress-free—no dragging the kids through an hour-long photoshoot. But since we only have a short window to capture the magic, I’ve got a few insider tips to help you make the most of your session and get photos you’ll love forever.

1. Show Up Early (Trust Me on This One!)

Let’s talk about those last-minute rush moments. You’re running out the door, trying to fix your toddler’s backwards shoes while simultaneously brushing your hair and convincing your partner that yes, this outfit is fine, and no, we don’t have time to change again. Sound familiar?

Mini sessions are scheduled back-to-back, which means if you’re late, your session time gets cut short, and that’s no fun for anyone. Arriving 10-15 minutes early gives you a moment to breathe, fix any flyaway hairs, and get the kids warmed up before it’s go-time.

 Pro Tip: Make sure everyone is fed and hydrated before the session. A hungry toddler = a not-so-cooperative toddler.

2. Pick Outfits That Make You Feel Amazing (and Won’t Drive You Crazy!)

What you wear in photos matters, but let’s keep it simple and stress-free. Stick to neutral, soft tones (cream, beige, earthy colors) that look timeless in any setting. Avoid logos, neon colors, and super busy patterns, since they can be distracting in photos. Choose coordinating outfits instead of matching. Think “color palette” rather than identical outfits. Add layers and textures, like cardigans, scarves, and soft fabrics add depth to your images!

3. Keep Your Mini Session Lighthearted & Let the Kids Be Kids

Listen, I know you want that one perfect photo where everyone is smiling directly at the camera, looking like a Pinterest family. But you know what? The best photos aren’t the perfectly posed ones. They’re the ones where your kid is giggling uncontrollably because dad whispered a silly joke in their ear. Or the ones where you’re snuggled up together, just being yourselves.

During mini sessions, I use fun prompts and games to get those natural smiles:

• “Who can give the biggest bear hug?”

So if your toddler insists on holding their favorite stuffed bunny in every shot? That’s part of the story. If your preschooler suddenly becomes a comedian mid-shoot? We’ll roll with it.
