There’s a stretch of childhood that tends to slip by quietly. It comes after the newborn days when everything feels brand new, and before the senior year when everyone suddenly realizes how quickly it all went. It’s the in-between. The years where life feels full and busy, where schedules pick up, personalities settle in, and families are simply living day to day without thinking much about documenting it.
I see it all the time. Families come to me for maternity photos, then newborn sessions, and sometimes I won’t see them again until those same babies are suddenly seniors. In between, there are years of growth that never quite make it onto the calendar for photos. Not because they don’t matter, but because life is moving fast and it feels like there will always be time later.
But this stage holds so much. It’s the gap-toothed smiles, the way little hands still reach for mom without thinking, the laughter that comes so easily, even on busy days. It’s the way siblings interact when no one is asking them to perform, and the way each child is becoming more themselves with every passing year. These are the years where your family starts to feel like your family.
What I love most about photographing this season is how relaxed it can be. There’s no pressure to capture a milestone or check a box. We’re simply documenting who your family is right now. Your kids don’t need to sit perfectly still or look at the camera every second. They can move, talk, laugh, and just be themselves, and that’s where the most meaningful images come from.
This is also the stage where moms tend to carry the most. You’re juggling school schedules, activities, work, and everything in between. Thinking about planning a photo session can feel like one more thing on a very full plate. That’s why I take so much of that off your shoulders. From styling everyone in a way that feels effortless and cohesive, to guiding you through the entire session, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
And the truth is, these are often the photos families come back to the most. Not because everything looked perfect, but because everything felt real. The way your child leaned into you, the way you all laughed together, the way this season of life looked before it quietly changed again.
If it’s been a while since you’ve had photos taken, and you’ve been waiting for the right time, this might be it. You don’t have to wait for a big milestone to make it meaningful. Sometimes the most important thing is simply choosing to remember what life looks like right now.
