By the time your newborn session arrives, chances are you have already spent weeks preparing for a baby. The nursery is coming together, tiny clothes are filling drawers, and you are trying to remember what day it is after a night of feeding and diaper changes. The last thing most new parents need is another long checklist when they are sleep deprived!

One thing I always tell my newborn families is that preparing for your session should feel simple. My goal is not to give you more work. My goal is to create a calm experience where you can walk in, take a deep breath, and let me handle the details. That starts long before you arrive at the studio.
One of the best things you can do before your session is give yourself permission to slow down. So many new moms worry about whether the house is clean, whether they packed everything, or whether the baby will cooperate. None of those things determine whether we’ll create beautiful images. Babies are wonderfully unpredictable, and after years of photographing newborns, I expect that. If your baby needs extra cuddles, extra feeding breaks, or a little more time to settle, that’s completely normal.
I also encourage parents to think about themselves before the session. New moms often spend so much energy caring for everyone else that they forget about their own comfort. One of the ways I help make things easier is through my client closet. Instead of shopping for something new or stressing over what will fit just a few weeks after giving birth, many moms choose a beautiful dress from the collection. I also help coordinate outfits for the entire family, which removes one more task from an already full plate. The less time you spend worrying about clothing, the more you can focus on enjoying this season with your baby.
If you’ve chosen a newborn session that includes parents and siblings, a little preparation for older children can go a long way. Rather than talking about smiling for pictures, talk about spending time with their new baby brother or sister. Children usually respond best when they feel relaxed and included. Some siblings are excited from the moment they walk in, while others need a little time to warm up. Both are completely normal. My job is to work with their personalities and create images that feel natural to your family.

Another thing many parents don’t realize is how much flexibility helps. Babies don’t follow schedules, especially in those first few weeks. If feeding runs late before you leave the house or your baby decides today is the day they want extra snuggles, don’t panic. Rushing almost always creates more stress. Give yourself extra time to get ready and know that we’ll adjust as needed once you arrive.
Perhaps the most important preparation tip of all is to remember why you’re booking a newborn session in the first place. This season passes incredibly fast. The tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and the way your baby curls up against your chest will change before you know it. When you arrive at my Fort Worth studio, I want you focused on soaking in those moments, not worrying about whether everything is going according to plan. I’ve spent years creating an experience that takes as much pressure off parents as possible so you can simply enjoy this fleeting stage.
If you’re expecting and thinking about newborn portraits in Fort Worth or the Dallas area, I’d love to help make the process feel easy from start to finish. From wardrobe coordination and access to the client closet to creating a comfortable, baby-led experience, my goal is to help you preserve these memories without adding more stress to an already busy season.
