If you are expecting a baby, chances are you have already spent some time looking at newborn photographers. Maybe you have saved a few images you love or started following photographers whose work keeps catching your eye. After a while, though, it can all start to run together, and figuring out who you actually want to trust with your brand-new baby can feel like a much bigger decision than you expected.
I have photographed newborns for many years, and one thing I have learned is that parents often do not know what questions to ask until after they have been through a newborn session. If this is your first baby, how would you know what the experience is supposed to be like? Beautiful photographs matter, of course, but there are a few other things I would consider before choosing your photographer.

Newborns have their own plans, and the best sessions leave room for that. Some babies arrive sound asleep and barely stir, while others want to look around at everything happening in the studio. A baby may need to eat again even though they just ate, or they may settle best in Mom’s arms for a while.
Working with newborns regularly teaches you how to adjust as you go. I never want parents worrying because their baby is not sleeping or wondering if we are running out of time. Your baby does not need to behave a certain way for us to create beautiful photographs.
During a newborn session, your photographer may be soothing, wrapping, posing, and holding your baby, so you should know that the person doing those things has experience and takes safety seriously.
I am careful about how babies are positioned and supported, and everything used during sessions is cleaned and sanitized. I also pay attention to the baby’s cues throughout the session. If your baby needs to eat, be held, or simply take a break, that is exactly what we do.

One thing parents may not realize when comparing newborn photographers is how different the experience can be. With some sessions, you may be responsible for figuring out what everyone will wear and how it will all work together. For a lot of new and expecting moms, that is one more decision they would happily hand over to someone else.
My client closet includes clothing for moms, dads, and children, and I help families with styling before their session. You do not need to spend your last few weeks of pregnancy ordering several dresses, making returns, and hoping everything works together. We can take care of that ahead of time.
Instagram is often where parents first find photographers, but spend some time looking through their website and blog too. Look at different sessions and different families. If you have an older child, see how siblings are included. Pay attention to family photographs as well as images of the baby alone.
You are choosing someone to photograph this chapter of your whole family, so it is worth seeing more than a handful of favorite images on a social media feed.

I hear this concern all the time. Parents tell me their baby never sleeps or worry that we will not get good photographs because their newborn is especially alert.
I promise, I have met plenty of very awake babies over the years! An experienced newborn photographer knows how to work with the baby who shows up that day. Wide-open eyes, tiny expressions, stretches, and quiet moments with Mom and Dad can all become photographs you love.
Those first weeks with a newborn can be wonderful and exhausting at the same time. Getting everyone dressed and out of the house may feel like an accomplishment all by itself, especially when you are still recovering and learning your baby’s rhythms.
I want my families to feel cared for when they come into my studio. You do not need to arrive with a perfectly sleeping baby, and your toddler does not need to be in a wonderful mood. You do not have to know how to stand or what photographs we should do next. I will guide you through the session and give your family the time we need.
If you are expecting a baby in Fort Worth, Keller, Southlake, or elsewhere in the DFW area, I would love to help you plan your newborn session. Reaching out during pregnancy gives us time to reserve space around your due date and handle the details ahead of time, so once your baby arrives, you can come in and let me take care of you.
