Bringing home a new baby is a beautiful change for the entire family, especially for a brand-new big brother or sister. Your toddler may be excited, curious, unsure, or feeling all of those emotions within the same five minutes. That is completely normal! When parents begin planning newborn photography in Fort Worth, they sometimes worry that including an energetic toddler will make the session stressful. They wonder whether their child will sit still, cooperate, or smile when asked.
I always want parents to know that perfection is not the goal. Your toddler does not need to perform for the camera or follow every direction. They simply need the time and space to be themselves. Some of the sweetest newborn photographs happen when an older sibling leans in for a closer look, gently touches the baby’s toes, or cuddles beside Mom and Dad. These little interactions help tell the complete story of your growing family.

Before your Fort Worth newborn photo session, tell your toddler that you are going to visit Paula, take some pictures with the new baby, and spend time together as a family. Keep the explanation positive and simple so they know what to expect without making it feel like a major event.
Try to avoid repeatedly reminding them that they must behave, sit still, or smile. Toddlers can sense when something feels like a test, and too much pressure may make them less interested in participating. Instead, explain that they have an important job as the new big brother or sister. Let them know that they will be included and that there will be plenty of time for cuddles and breaks.
The goal is to help your toddler feel safe and valued during a season when so much attention naturally centers on the new baby.
Some toddlers walk into my Fort Worth photography studio ready to explore, while others prefer to stay close to a parent and observe the room first. Both reactions are completely okay. Your child does not have to be ready for photographs the moment you arrive.
Traditional newborn sessions can last up to two hours, giving us time to slow down and follow your family’s rhythm. Your toddler may need a few minutes to become familiar with the studio or get comfortable with me before participating. Rushing usually creates more resistance, while a little patience gives children an opportunity to warm up in their own way.
I have worked with many children over the years, and as a mom and nana, I understand that toddlers have their own personalities and timelines. My job is to help your family feel relaxed, not to expect a young child to behave like an adult.

Toddlers often respond better when they feel included instead of managed. During your newborn family photos, we can invite your child to participate in simple, natural ways. They might sit beside the baby, look at those tiny fingers, give a gentle kiss, hold Mom’s hand, or snuggle close for a family portrait.
Some toddlers will be eager to get close to their new sibling, while others may prefer to keep a little distance. We will never need to force a particular pose. If your child does not want to lie beside the baby, we can create a family portrait while the baby is safely held by a parent. A curious glance or a tiny hand resting nearby can tell the sibling story just as beautifully as a traditional pose.
Giving your toddler an important role can also help reassure them that this session belongs to the whole family—not only to the new baby.
Your toddler may cuddle the baby for several minutes, or they may stay close for only a few seconds. Either can be enough to create a photograph you will treasure. Young children naturally have short attention spans, so I would much rather capture a quick, honest connection than force a moment that does not feel natural.
Your child may smile, laugh, wiggle, look serious, or decide that sitting in Mom’s lap is the only acceptable option. Those expressions are part of who your toddler is right now. Family newborn photography is not about making every person look perfectly posed. It is about preserving the relationships and personalities that make your family unique.
Sometimes the image parents love most is not the one where everyone is looking at the camera. It is the one where their toddler is studying the baby’s face, Dad is laughing, and Mom is taking in the beautiful chaos of her growing family.
Comfort is especially important when choosing clothing for a toddler. An outfit that feels itchy, tight, or unfamiliar can quickly become a distraction. Select soft pieces that allow your child to sit, move, and cuddle comfortably.
Neutral colors, gentle textures, and coordinating tones photograph beautifully because they keep the attention on your family’s connection. You do not have to plan everything alone. I help families with wardrobe and styling so everyone’s clothing works together and complements the timeless look of their newborn photographs.
My Fort Worth newborn photography studio is fully stocked with what we need for your baby’s session. Traditional newborn sessions can last up to two hours, allowing time for feedings, soothing, sibling needs, and breaks. Lifestyle newborn and family sessions are also available for families who prefer a more natural, connection-focused experience.
You do not need a perfectly sleepy newborn or a perfectly cooperative toddler to create beautiful photographs. You only need to bring the people you love. I will help guide you through the rest.
