When you are expecting a baby, choosing a photographer for maternity and newborn photos can feel like two completely separate things on the calendar. One happens while you are still waiting to meet your baby, and the other happens once your whole world has changed. But I love when families choose to have me photograph both. There is something really special about being able to tell both parts of that story and give families images that naturally belong together.

One of the biggest benefits is simply that we already know each other by the time your newborn session arrives. During your maternity session, you have a chance to get comfortable in front of my camera and learn how I guide you through photos. I get to know you, your family, and what photographs you are naturally drawn to. Then, when you walk into my Fort Worth studio with your new baby, you are coming back to someone familiar instead of starting over with a brand-new photographer during those very early postpartum days.

It also makes planning much easier. I help style my clients for their sessions, and my client closet includes options for moms, dads, and children. When I am photographing both maternity and newborn photos, I can think about the two sessions together. They do not need to match, but I can help create a look that feels consistent so the finished images work beautifully alongside one another in an album or throughout your home.
There is also a wonderful progression that happens between the two sessions. During maternity photos, the focus is on this baby you are already loving before you have even met them. Maybe we photograph Dad with his hand on your belly or an older sibling waiting very impatiently to become a big brother or sister. A few weeks later, that same family is back in front of my camera, except now there is a tiny new person in everyone’s arms. I get to photograph the connection that we were only imagining during your maternity session.
For parents, I think having the same photographer can also take one decision off an already very full plate. You already know what to expect from me. You know how I communicate, how I approach your family, and how much preparation happens before your session. When it is time for newborn photos, you can focus on feeding your baby, getting yourself ready, and making it to the studio. I will take care of the rest once you arrive.

Another benefit is that I already have a little history with your family. I may remember that your toddler needed extra time to warm up during maternity photos or that Dad feels much more comfortable when I give him plenty of direction. Those little things matter. Every family is different, and having that familiarity helps me plan a newborn session that feels comfortable for the people walking through my studio door.
Of course, you do not have to use the same photographer for both. Sometimes families find me after their maternity photos have already been taken, and I am always happy to welcome them for newborn portraits. But if you are still early in your pregnancy and thinking ahead, booking both sessions with the same photographer can make the entire experience feel much simpler and more connected.

Maternity and newborn photos capture such a short stretch of your family’s life. One day you are wondering who this little person will be, and soon after, you are holding them. I love being able to photograph both sides of that moment for my Fort Worth families and give them a collection of images that shows just how much changed in a matter of weeks.
