We love our cake smash sessions around here! They are always a time filled with giggles, smiles, and yes, frosting! But, because cake smash sessions are also ones filled with unpredictable and adorable tiny humans, they also can be a bit stressful for parents and children alike. We work very hard to plan a custom cake smash shoot that will be one-of-a-kind for each child. I’ve put together some of our very best tips for a smooth and successful cake smash session below:
-Try out textures and ideas before the cake smash: This might be hard for parents who strictly limit cake/sugar in their homes, but it can really help a little one with the taste and texture before the big day. Some children dislike the feel of frosting and cake on their hands, and it’s nice to know this beforehand. You don’t need to sample a fancy cake as a trial run, feel free to try something easy/premade or boxed. If your baby hates it, you can consider alternatives such as a donut cake, or a stack of yummy flapjacks!
-Setup your decor beforehand to see how it looks: If you are helping with the props or decor (I am always happy to pipe in with ideas or suggestions, or to help you come up with a theme, and do so for many of our clients), I strongly suggest assembling items like banners or hanging items before the session, instead of leaving it till the very last second. It is also helpful to make sure you aren’t missing any pieces/components of store-bought props, so you have a chance to fix or replace anything before the shoot.
-Prepare for a mess: Frosting is messy, and although we help with the mess portion, it’s best to prepare your own attire and your child’s for a bit of frosting leftovers. A family heirloom outfit may not work with brightly colored frosting in case of stains, so just bear that in mind. Our cake smash session include time for two outfits, one for the main portion of the session, and another just for the cake smash. If you don’t want to ruin a particular outfit, you may consider having your little one wear it for the regular segment.
-Book in advance: Many parents want to use the cake smash photos for that perfect invitation. They look adorable and they can help tie your theme together really nicely. The photos also look beautiful when framed and displayed at a party, too! Please book at least four weeks in advance if you are needing to use them for invites, and two weeks in advance if you only want to show them off at the birthday party.
