No matter how old your children are, a new baby can be a big adjustment for an entire family. Even if the older children are teens, sleeplessness and a change in routines can make it challenging in those first few weeks! For your newborn session, one way to achieve a successful and stress-free experience is by preparing your other children for the shoot. Here are some ideas and tips for helping everyone get ready for a newborn session you’ll remember (for the right reasons!):
Explain the process clearly and in age-appropriate terms: For little children, they may not understand what a photoshoot is, or what will happen. Show them photos of family friends that have had newborn photos done, or look some up online. Explain the expectations you have (such as sitting still or holding the baby, etc) so that they feel confident and prepared.
Let everyone’s feelings and opinions be heard: Some older siblings may not be on board for a photo session, and it’s important to validate their feelings and finding a compromise you can all work with. Offering them an option they can control, like choosing an outfit or a pair of shoes they can be excited about, or offering to style their hair can go a long way in helping them feel heard. Emphasize how this session is for your family as a whole, and everyone’s role is important. If they are older and leadership driven, ask them to take a role such as helping steam clothes or helping with little ones.
Make it a positive experience: I always emphasize that photo sessions should be a positive experience for everyone, and that starts with mom and dad. Use positive language and body language when explaining the process, and make sure you are emotionally regulated during the process. I also recommend rewarding little ones with a positive experience afterward, such as going out for ice cream or with a little treat like a lollipop. Keeping things cheerful and lighthearted will encourage them to associate happy memories with family or newborn photos, instead of stress.
Older children can be a wonderful addition to newborn photos, and you will treasure the photos forever! It’s so important to older siblings feel important and validated in the days after a sibling joins the family, and family photos can be the perfect way to solidify their bond.
