There’s something so special about photographing a family during a time of transition, when life is on the cusp of change but still anchored in the everyday love and connection they share. That’s exactly what this session felt like: a beautiful pause before the arrival of their newest little one. I spent the morning with Mom and her two boys, Jack and Gavin, and from the moment we started, I could feel just how close this trio is.
Jack, who’s 8, has this gentle, big-brother presence. He’s calm, thoughtful, and you can tell how much he cares for his little brother. Then there’s Gavin. At just 21 months old, full of energy, and always on the move. He’s in that wonderfully curious stage where everything is an adventure, and his bright eyes and infectious giggles were the perfect match for Jack’s more laid-back personality. The way they interacted was so genuine and sweet, whether it was playing together or just quietly leaning into their mom for comfort. Mom wanted this session to capture their natural smiles and laughs, and that’s exactly what we got. The moments didn’t feel forced; they just unfolded naturally, full of warmth and love. One of my favorite things was capturing the close-ups: Jack’s gentle grin, Gavin’s wide-eyed wonder, and the way they both light up when their mom is nearby. You could see how much they adore her, and it’s clear that she’s their rock, especially in this in-between time before they become a family of four.
I also loved catching those little everyday interactions that often go unnoticed but mean the world. The way Jack instinctively reaches for Gavin’s hand or the way Gavin cuddles up to his mom when he’s feeling a bit shy. It’s in those small, fleeting moments that you can feel how connected they are. This family is about to welcome a baby girl, and I can’t help but feel excited for what’s ahead for them. These quiet, intimate moments we captured will soon be joined by new memories, but for now, I’m grateful to have frozen this little slice of time for them: before their world expands just a little bit more. Moments like these are why I love being behind the camera.
