When you’re expecting a baby, there are a lot of decisions to make, and maternity photos are usually just one more thing on an already long list. Most moms start by looking through portfolios or asking friends for recommendations, which is a great place to begin. But after photographing so many growing families over the years, I’ve realized there are a few questions that don’t get asked often enough. The answers can make a huge difference in how you feel about your experience, not just your finished photographs.

The first question I always encourage parents to ask is, “Will I have to figure everything out myself?” Pregnancy is exhausting, and the last thing most moms want to do is spend hours shopping for a dress they’ll wear once. That’s one of the reasons I offer a client closet filled with beautiful maternity gowns, and I can even help coordinate outfits for your partner and children if they’re joining the session. My goal is to take as much off your plate as possible so you can simply show up and enjoy the experience.
Another important question is, “When should I schedule my maternity session?” I usually recommend planning your session when you’re around 28 and 34 weeks pregnant. During that window, most moms have a beautiful baby bump but are still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy themselves. Booking early also gives you the best chance of securing a spot on my calendar, especially during busy seasons. We understand every birth situation is different, so please let me know if you need accommodations to these recommended time frames (due to having a preemie or etc.)
I also hear this concern all the time, even if it’s not phrased as a question: “What if I don’t feel beautiful right now?” If that’s how you’re feeling, you’re not alone. Almost every expecting mom who walks into my studio says some version of this. Pregnancy changes your body in ways that can feel unfamiliar, and it can be hard to imagine loving photos of yourself. That’s where experience matters. I know how to pose you in flattering ways, how to use light that highlights your beautiful bump, and how to help you relax so your confidence shines through. You do not have to know what to do. That’s my job.

Another question worth asking is, “Who chooses the location?” I know that sounds simple, but it matters more than people think. I choose the locations and the timing for my outdoor maternity sessions because I know where the light is best and which spots photograph beautifully throughout the year. Instead of asking you to scroll through endless location ideas, I take care of that part so your session feels easy from beginning to end.
Finally, I hope parents ask themselves one question that has nothing to do with photography equipment or pricing: “Do I feel comfortable with this photographer?” Maternity sessions are personal. You’re celebrating a season that is exciting, emotional, and sometimes vulnerable. You deserve someone who makes you laugh, helps you feel at ease, and genuinely cares about your family. Beautiful images are important, but the experience of creating them matters just as much.

If you’re looking for a Fort Worth maternity photographer, I hope you find someone who makes you feel cared for from the moment you inquire until your gallery is delivered. If that photographer happens to be me, I would be honored to help you celebrate this incredible season before your little one arrives.
