Giving birth and being born brings us into the essence of creation, where the human spirit is courageous and bold and the body, a miracle of wisdom.

Maternity photos are one of our favorite types of sessions; there is something really precious about a mom-to-be and the way she glows and smiles, with the secret love that only a mother knows. A maternity session can be a tricky session to dress for; with a changing body and a growing belly, some mamas aren’t sure what will be flattering or what they will feel beautiful in. Here are some tips for dressing for a picture-perfect maternity shoot:
This is a beautiful example of a very classic maternity look. It is flattering on multiple body types, and draws attention to the belly without being showy or distracting. This pretty mama-to-be paired a cute neutral top with classic blue jeans and sleek knee boots complete her ensemble. The henley style top is simple, and the side ruching creates a feminine shape. Example of classic styles include solid maternity tops, blue jeans or black pants, and flats, ankle boots, or knee high boots. These can all be combined to create looks that will withstand the test of time and also photograph well!
Here is a more flowy, bohemian look, with a less fitted top and bolder accessories, paired with a neutral colored pant or legging. You can find bohemian styled items that aren’t maternity at places like Anthropologie, ModCloth, and Free People, and sometimes the more flowey style will allow you to wear them after pregnancy, also! Keep bohemian prints from overwhelming you by keeping them grounded with a dark or solid color top or bottom. Here, the lovely expecting mama has chosen simple black flats and leggings to keep the eye upward towards her face and her adorable baby bump!
Here is our last look, a more modern and daring look with a see through lace panel and dramatic makeup. For the mamas who are very comfortable with showing just a little more skin (still covered but more attention is drawn to the belly), it can be a very beautiful and moving interpretation of maternity portraits, and really shows the outline and growth of a sweet baby! All of these options can be mixed and matched too! Perhaps you want classic photos to share with family and more dramatic ones for your hubby! We can do them all. Ready too book?
