Choosing outfits for a family photo session can feel surprisingly stressful. I hear it all the time from Fort Worth families who tell me they spent more time worrying about clothes than anything else. The good news is that it really does not have to be complicated. Over the years of photographing families, I have noticed a few common outfit mistakes that can make photos feel less cohesive. With a little planning and a little guidance, it is easy to avoid them and create images that feel natural, timeless, and beautiful.
One of the biggest mistakes families make is trying to match exactly instead of coordinating. Years ago it was common for everyone to wear the same white shirt and blue jeans. These days that approach can make photos look flat and dated. Instead, I encourage families to choose colors that complement each other. Soft neutrals, gentle patterns, and a shared color palette create interest while still keeping the group connected visually.
Another common issue is choosing clothing with large logos, graphics, or very bold patterns. These can quickly pull attention away from the people in the photo. When someone looks at your images years from now, the focus should be on your family’s expressions and connection, not a brand name across a shirt. Simple textures, small patterns, and classic pieces photograph beautifully and keep the attention where it belongs.
Sometimes families also choose outfits that are a little too formal for the setting. If we are photographing your family outdoors in a sunlit Fort Worth field or park, clothing that feels relaxed and comfortable usually photographs best. Flowing dresses, soft sweaters, button ups, and layers tend to move nicely and feel natural in outdoor light. When everyone feels comfortable, it shows in the photos.
Another thing I gently remind families is to think about movement and comfort, especially for little ones. If a toddler is tugging at itchy fabric or stiff shoes the entire session, it can make things harder for everyone. Clothing that allows kids to sit, run, cuddle, and play makes the session feel easier and more relaxed. Those natural moments are often the ones families love the most.
It is also easy to forget about how colors interact with the environment. Very bright neon colors or extremely dark clothing can sometimes photograph harshly in natural light. I often recommend warm neutrals, soft earth tones, creams, dusty blues, sage greens, or muted pinks because they photograph beautifully in the golden Fort Worth sunlight that I love to use in my sessions.
And if choosing outfits still feels overwhelming, I have a little no-so-secret that many of my clients love. I offer a curated client closet filled with beautiful dresses and separates for moms, dads, and little ones that photograph wonderfully. These pieces were chosen specifically because they work well in outdoor light and complement the soft, natural style of my sessions. Many families find that working with my client closet removes the stress from the experience completely.
If you ever feel unsure about what to wear, you do not have to figure it out alone. Helping families plan outfits and coordinate clothing is one of my favorite parts of the process because it helps everyone feel confident before the session even begins. If you are planning a newborn, maternity, or family session in the Fort Worth area, I would love to help you create a look that feels beautiful, comfortable, and completely true to your family.
