When people think about professional photos for their children, there is usually a milestone attached. Newborn sessions, first birthdays, kindergarten graduations, senior portraits, and everything in between tend to revolve around a specific event or accomplishment. Those milestones are absolutely worth celebrating, but sometimes I think the children who fall between the big moments get overlooked. As a Fort Worth family photographer and a mom myself, I can tell you that every child has a story worth documenting, whether they have a milestone coming up or not.
Middle children seem especially prone to this. They are often easygoing, adaptable, and used to sharing attention with siblings. They may not be the first baby whose every milestone was photographed, and they may not be the youngest who still gets plenty of attention simply because they are little. Before you know it, years have passed and you realize there are very few photographs that focus on them and who they are during this particular season of childhood.
What I love about individual child sessions is that they give kids the chance to be completely themselves. There are no siblings competing for attention, no pressure to keep everyone looking at the camera, and no need to divide the session between multiple personalities. We can slow down and focus entirely on one child, capturing the expressions, interests, and little quirks that make them who they are right now.
These sessions are not about creating perfect portraits. They are about preserving personality. Maybe your child is missing front teeth, obsessed with dinosaurs, carrying around a well-loved stuffed animal, or suddenly developing a sense of humor that keeps the whole family laughing. Childhood changes so quickly, and some of the most meaningful photographs come from ordinary years that did not seem particularly significant at the time.
One of the things parents tell me most often after a session is how much their child loved having a little one-on-one time. Kids light up when they realize the entire experience is about them. They feel seen. They feel important. For many children, especially those who spend their days sharing attention with siblings, that experience alone can be incredibly special.
The truth is that children do not need a major milestone to deserve beautiful photographs. They do not have to be turning one, starting school, or graduating. Sometimes the reason is simply that this is who they are right now, and you want to remember it. Years from now, those photographs may remind you of a favorite smile, a certain laugh, or a stage of childhood that seemed ordinary while you were living it but feels priceless once it has passed.
If you’ve been waiting for the “right reason” to schedule photos for one of your children, consider this your reminder that they are reason enough. Whether they’re the middle child, the quiet child, the energetic child, or the child who somehow always ends up just outside the spotlight, their story matters. As a Fort Worth photographer, some of my favorite sessions are the ones that celebrate children exactly as they are, with no milestone required.
