When families come to my studio, they’re usually thinking ahead. They’re planning holiday cards, updating the pictures on the wall, or finally replacing that family photo that’s several years old. Those are wonderful reasons to schedule a session, but there’s something else that happens after the gallery is delivered that I don’t think parents expect.
It’s the moment their children see the finished photos.
Seeing family photos gives kids memories to hold onto
I’ve watched little ones point excitedly at a framed portrait and announce everyone’s name as if they’re introducing the people they love most. I’ve seen toddlers laugh because they remember twirling in a dress or being tossed into the air by Dad. Even older kids who claim they don’t like having their picture taken can’t help but smile when they see an image that actually feels like them.
Children don’t look at family photographs the way adults do. They’re not wondering if their hair looked right or whether everyone was facing the camera. They see hugs. They see laughter, and see themselves wrapped up in the people who love them most. That’s what captures their attention.
One of my favorite parts of this job is hearing what happens after families get their images home. A parent will tell me their child walks past the family portrait every morning on the way to school. Another will say their preschooler loves flipping through their album before bed. Those little routines aren’t something anyone plans for, but they become part of everyday life in the sweetest way.
I think there’s something powerful about children growing up surrounded by pictures of their family. It quietly reminds them that they belong, that their story matters, and that this season of life was worth remembering. Long before they understand the effort that went into planning a session, they understand what it feels like to see themselves loved.

That’s one of the reasons I always encourage families to enjoy their photographs beyond a phone screen. Digital images are wonderful, and I’m grateful we have them, but there is something different about seeing your family’s story hanging on the wall or sitting on the coffee table where little hands can turn the pages. Those are the photos children come back to again and again.
Years from now, your kids probably won’t remember what they wore to their family session or whether they needed a snack halfway through. What they’ll remember is seeing those photographs throughout their childhood. They’ll remember the feeling of being together, and one day those images will help tell the story of a home where they were deeply loved.
When your gallery is ready, don’t be surprised if your favorite reaction isn’t your own. Sit down with your kids, scroll through the images together, and listen to what they notice. You might be surprised by the memories they bring up, the moments they laugh about, or the picture they ask to see one more time. Those conversations are a gift all by themselves, and they’re one of my favorite parts of what I get to do.
