I get asked about the “right” schedule for family photos quite a bit, and I don’t think there is one answer that works for every family. Some families come back to me every year, while others schedule a session when they realize it has been a while or when life feels like it has changed overnight. But if you’re wondering whether taking family photos every year is worth it, I do think there are some very good reasons to make room for them.
One of the biggest is simply how quickly kids change. When you see your children every day, it can be hard to notice just how much is happening right in front of you. The toddler who wanted to be carried everywhere suddenly wants to run ahead. The child who was missing their front teeth is suddenly looking so grown up. Your teenager gets taller, their style changes, and somehow the little kid you still picture in your head isn’t quite so little anymore. A year can make a much bigger difference than we realize while we’re living it.
Annual family photos also give you a record of your family as it actually grows. I love looking at photographs from several years in a row because you can see so much beyond how everyone looked. You notice which child always wanted to stand next to Dad, who went through the phase of refusing to take off a favorite pair of boots, and how the relationships between siblings changed as they got older. Those are the details that are easy to forget until a photograph brings them right back.
And no, that doesn’t mean every family session needs to look completely different from the year before. I actually think there is something really special about having consistency in your family photographs. Your children are the part that changes. Their personalities grow, their relationships shift, and the way they interact with you looks different each year. We don’t need to manufacture something brand new to make your next gallery meaningful.
I also hear from parents who hesitate to book because they feel like nothing “big” has happened since their last session. You don’t need a new baby, a milestone birthday, or another major event to have a reason for family photos. Sometimes an ordinary year is exactly the one you’ll want to remember later. Your youngest may still fit perfectly on your hip. Your oldest may still be living at home. Everyone may still be under one roof for dinner most nights. Those things can feel completely normal now and very significant a few years from now.
For families who worry about the work involved, I try to make the process as simple as I can. I select the location and timing for my sessions, and I help style my families so you aren’t left trying to figure out what everyone should wear on your own. My client closet includes options for moms, dads, and kids, which can take a lot of the stress out of getting everyone ready. You don’t need to reinvent your family wardrobe every year just because you want updated photographs.
So, should you take family photos every year? If it works for your family, I think it is a wonderful rhythm to have. Not because you need a perfect portrait every twelve months, but because twelve months is a long time in the life of a child. When you eventually look back at those photographs together, you get to see all those little changes that were happening while you were busy living them.
If it has been a year, or maybe a few, since your last family session, I would love to photograph this season for you. I photograph families throughout the Fort Worth and Dallas area and take care of the details that can make planning family photos feel overwhelming. You simply get to show up with the people you love and let me take it from there.
