One of the questions that comes up when families start thinking about photos is where the session will take place. Maybe you’ve seen a pretty field while driving around Fort Worth or saved a photo online because you loved the setting. But when you book a family session with me, choosing the location is one thing you can officially take off your list. I select the location for every session, and there’s a lot of thought that goes into that decision.
I’ve learned over the years that a location can look beautiful and still not necessarily be the right place for photos. The way the light falls matters tremendously, and that can change depending on the season and time of year. I’m looking at the setting through a photographer’s eyes and thinking about how it will actually photograph, rather than asking you to figure all of that out on your own.

My goal is to make planning family photos feel as simple as possible for you. There are already plenty of decisions involved in getting everyone ready, especially when you have young children. You shouldn’t also have to spend your evenings searching for locations, wondering which ones allow photography, or trying to decide whether the spot you found will work with your session.
Choosing the location myself also allows me to plan your session as a whole. I know what different settings look like through my camera, how the light behaves there, and how I want to use the space. It takes some of the guesswork out of the experience for both of us and allows you to simply show up knowing I’ve already taken care of that part.

This is also one of the reasons I help style my clients. Your clothing and the setting aren’t two completely separate decisions. I want everything to work beautifully together in the finished images.
When I’m helping you plan what your family will wear, I’m already thinking about how those colors, textures, and pieces will photograph. My client closet is available for moms, dads, and children, which can make getting everyone dressed much easier too. Instead of choosing outfits and then hoping they work with a location you selected, those pieces of your session are considered together.

Children are another reason I prefer to make the location decision myself. Family photography needs room for kids to be kids. I want to be able to photograph your family in a way that feels comfortable and gives me the flexibility I need to work with your children rather than expecting them to stand perfectly still and smile on command.
Every family is different, and I keep that in mind as I prepare for your session. You don’t need to know what kind of location will photograph best with your children or worry about whether you’ve made the “right” choice. That’s part of my job.

I know family photos can sometimes feel like a lot to coordinate. Everyone needs something to wear, schedules have to line up, and somehow you have to get the whole family out the door looking photo-ready. This is exactly why I don’t want you worrying about scouting the perfect location too.
When you book your family photos with me, you’re not handed a list of places and asked to figure it out. I take care of selecting the location and guiding you through the planning process so you have fewer decisions to make before your session.
And when session day arrives, you can focus on your family. I’ll already know where we’re going, how I want to photograph there, and how everything we’ve planned will come together. That’s the kind of family photography experience I want to give my clients: thoughtful, guided, and a whole lot easier on you.
If you’re ready to update your family photos, I’d love to help you plan a session. You can learn more about my family photography experience and get in touch to start planning.
