Moving into a new family home comes with so many little moments you probably aren’t thinking about photographing. The first meals around the table, kids figuring out which room is theirs, boxes that somehow stick around longer than planned, and the routines that slowly start making a new place feel familiar.
That’s why I loved the idea behind this family’s session so much. They had recently moved into a new home and wanted family photos to celebrate this season. Instead of treating the house as simply a backdrop, we focused on the things they were already doing there together. We gathered around the piano, spent time in the kitchen, snuggled up together and even brought out the Blue Bell ice cream. Those simple pieces of their everyday life made the session feel personal to them.

One of the biggest hesitations families have about an in-home family photography session is the house itself. Maybe you haven’t finished decorating. There are still projects on the list. The kids’ rooms don’t look like something you’d find on Pinterest, and there may be a pile of everyday life sitting just outside the frame.
That’s okay.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. Years from now, you may be surprised by how much you love seeing the little details that instantly take you back to this stage of your family’s life. The kitchen where everyone gathered after school. The piano your child practiced on. The couch that always seemed to fit one more person. Those details become part of your family’s memories too.
This is where I think lifestyle family photography can be so much fun. We can incorporate things your family actually enjoys doing together instead of trying to turn your home into a photography studio.
For this family, that meant gathering around the piano and sharing ice cream in the kitchen. For another family, it could mean reading together, making pancakes, playing with the kids in their favorite room or simply curling up together somewhere comfortable.
The activity itself isn’t really the important part. It gives everyone something familiar to do while I photograph the interactions happening naturally around it. Especially with children, having something to focus on can make the experience feel much more comfortable.

We usually think about booking family photos around birthdays, holidays or yearly milestones, but moving into a new home is a milestone too. It marks the beginning of a chapter your kids may eventually remember as a huge part of their childhood.
Right now, it may simply feel like your new house. A few years from now, it could be the kitchen where birthdays were celebrated, the living room where Christmas mornings happened and the bedroom your child couldn’t wait to decorate.
Photographing your family there early on gives you a little piece of the beginning.
And you don’t have to know exactly what your session should look like before reaching out. Part of my job is helping you plan the details so your photos feel like your family and fit naturally into the experience I create for my clients.
