If you’re planning newborn photos, there’s a good chance you’ve spent plenty of time thinking about what your baby will wear and almost no time thinking about yourself. Then your session gets closer and suddenly you’re standing in your closet wondering what on earth feels comfortable, photographs well, and still feels like you just weeks after having a baby.
First, please know that you do not need to go shopping for the perfect outfit. When you book your newborn session with me, styling is part of the experience. I have a client closet with beautiful options for moms, dads, and children, and I’m here to help you put everything together so your family looks coordinated without feeling overly matched.

For moms, I usually recommend starting with comfort. Your body has been through a lot, and the last thing I want is for you to spend your newborn session tugging at a dress or worrying about how something fits. Soft fabrics, flowing silhouettes, and pieces that give you room to move and snuggle your baby tend to photograph beautifully. The goal is to find something that makes you feel good when you put it on, especially during a season when your body may still feel unfamiliar.
I also love keeping the overall color palette soft and fairly neutral for newborn photos. Your baby is the focus, and simple colors allow all those tiny details to stand out without competing with busy patterns or bold graphics. We can coordinate the rest of the family around what you’re wearing so everyone looks like they belongs together without showing up in identical outfits.
And yes, I know it can feel vulnerable to be photographed so soon after having a baby. You may be tired. Your clothes may fit differently. You may not feel completely like yourself yet. That’s exactly why I don’t expect you to arrive knowing what to wear, how to stand, or what is going to photograph best. Those are things I can help you with.

During your session, I’ll guide you into positions that are comfortable and flattering while keeping the focus where it belongs: on your connection with your new baby. Some of the photographs parents end up loving most are the simple ones. Holding your baby against your chest, looking down at that tiny face, or having your whole family tucked in close together can become the images that bring you right back to this season years from now.
Your newborn session takes place in my studio, which also means you don’t have to worry about getting your home photo-ready or packing half the nursery. I’ll help with wardrobe, we’ll take our time with your baby, and there is room for feeding, soothing, and settling along the way.
So, what should Mom wear for newborn photos? Something comfortable, something that photographs beautifully, and most importantly, something she feels good in. And if figuring that out feels like one more decision you simply don’t have the energy to make right now, that’s exactly what my client closet and styling help are here for.
