The Mortimer family is one that is very close to my heart. Our kids have grown up together, and we attended the same church for many years. Over time, we have had so many great times together, and built truly irreplaceable memories and fellowship. It has been an incredible gift to watch Lola and George’s kids grow up and become parents themselves, and I have enjoyed capturing some memories for them. They are a beautiful family, inside and out, and they share such a strong bond between them. I especially love the images of the grandparents with their grandchildren, because of the joy that is evident on everyone’s faces! This large family shoot is a prime example of how to dress for a photoshoot in the fall. Here are a few pointers if you are preparing for family photos of your own:

1. Dress in seasonally appropriate tones: Bright highlighter colors or neons are not the best look against the fall foliage. I recommend muted tones, neutrals, or jewel tones for achieving a polished and pretty look. As you can see below, this family opted for tones of blue, pink, and cream, which all look so great together and coordinate!
2. Wear the right footwear and clothing: Sometimes the fall weather here in Texas is warm enough that you can still wear a short dress or high heels, but it tends to be more seasonally appropriate to wear items that would be associated with fall: such as flats, boots, jeans, mid or long sleeve blouses, and maxi skirts. These items will give your portraits more of a seasonal look and keep them from looking too summery.
3. Don’t get matching clothing, go for coordinates: As you can see below, none of the family is wearing the exact same outfit. Doing so can really cause you to blend in with each other, not to mention it makes every family member look identical. While matching outfits can be very cute in the right instance, we recommend coordinating rather than matching for family photos. You could provide your family members with the color palette and let them choose their own outfits to keep things simple, or you could suggest that you all wear a similar type of clothing (like blouses and jeans or maxi dresses) within a color family. Coordinating and mixing up textures as well as tones will keep the photo full of depth and interest!
