Family photo sessions can be a wonderful experience with a bit of preparation. Start by choosing the right outfits. If your photographer offers wardrobe options, take advantage of them, and ensure everyone tries on their clothes beforehand to avoid last-minute surprises. Keeping the day low-key is also crucial. Make sure it’s not packed with activities so your kids remain calm and relaxed, which sets the stage for a successful photo session.
On the Day of: On the day of the shoot, think about your children’s needs. Make sure they are well-fed and rested to prevent any crankiness. It’s also wise to have some emergency snacks on hand to keep everyone happy. Try to prevent car naps unless there’s plenty of time for them to wake up and adjust before the session. This helps ensure they’re in a good mood when it’s time to take photos.
Keep things simple: When you arrive at the location, give your kids some time to acclimate. Arriving just a few minutes early can help them get comfortable with their surroundings, which makes the session go smoother (keep in mind that mini sessions run on a tight schedule, so I will be shooting other clients and will not be able to squeeze you in earlier). Avoid overwhelming them with too many instructions or using bribes, as this can add unnecessary stress. Keep things simple and fun to maintain a positive atmosphere.
Plan a special treat: Finally, plan a fun activity or reward for after the session. This gives your kids something to look forward to and helps them associate the photo session with a pleasant experience. Whether it’s a trip to the park or a special treat, ending the day on a high note makes everyone more likely to enjoy the process and be excited for the next family photo shoot!
