When you picture a photo session for your toddlers, you might imagine sweet smiles, happy giggles, and everyone looking right at the camera. Then the day arrives and your toddler has other ideas. They want to run, explore, hide behind your legs, or insist they are absolutely not smiling for anyone. If that sounds familiar, please know you are not alone. As a Fort Worth newborn and family photographer and a nana myself, I have seen it all, and it truly is okay.

The first thing I always remind parents is that toddlers are meant to be toddlers. They are curious, busy little people who are still figuring out the world. Expecting them to sit perfectly still and smile on command usually leads to frustration for everyone. Some of the sweetest photographs actually happen when we stop trying to control every moment and simply let them be themselves.
One helpful thing you can do before your session is keep the day simple. Try not to schedule a lot of activities beforehand so your little one is not overtired or overstimulated. A good nap and a small snack before you arrive can make a big difference. When toddlers feel rested and comfortable, they are much more willing to engage and play.

During the session, I take a very gentle and relaxed approach. I never expect toddlers to perform. Instead, we turn the experience into something that feels more like play than posing. Walking together, cuddling with mom and dad, or letting your child explore a little often leads to the most genuine moments. Those natural interactions are what create the warm, heartfelt photos families love most.
I also like to give toddlers something to do or accomplish during the session to help them engage. Sometimes it might be asking them to bring a flower to mom, give dad a big hug, or show me how fast they can run to a certain spot. When they feel like they have a little job or a fun task, they often become much more interested in participating.
Parents sometimes worry when their child will not look at the camera, but those moments can be just as beautiful. A toddler holding your hand, leaning into a hug, or giggling while you lift them up tells the story of this season of life. These are the little glimpses of childhood that you will treasure years from now.

Another thing that helps more than you might realize is staying calm. Toddlers are very good at sensing stress. When parents relax, laugh, and go with the flow, children usually follow that energy. I am always happy to guide you through the session so it feels easy and enjoyable rather than pressured. If you have been putting off family photos because you are worried your toddler will not cooperate, please do not let that stop you. I would love to help you capture this stage just as it is, busy feet, big feelings, and all.
