I wanted to talk a little bit today about the different ages and shoots that happen in the first year. Sometimes, parents only schedule newborn photos, then let the rest of the first year go undocumented. Sure, we all have smartphones and maybe even a nice digital camera, but you’ll never get that year back. I’d argue that that first year is the one when your child changes the most, and the fastest. They go from teeny newborns to mobile little ones with just a blink of an eye, and although I’m often asked what age is the perfect age for a photoshoot, I’d say each milestone is important. Here’s why:

Newborn: This one is fairly obvious and a very popular age to do a photoshoot, and no wonder! I love seeing these fresh little ones, and parents often marvel at how quickly they change after their newborn shoot, which makes it really crucial (see Avery’s adorable shoot here)

Six Months Old: I call this my “little
sitters” stage, when most babies can sit with assistance (though some can sit alone), and can be propped up with the sweet little themed items (like this sweet woodland session, or this vintage inspired floral/neutral session). I love incorporating props and outfits into this age.

Nine Months Old: This one is often overlooked, but it’s really when little personalities start to emerge! The babies at this age love to laugh and move around, so I try to make these shoots lively and full of movement to help hold their interest. Blakeley’s session took place in a garden area (see it here) and Alexis wa able to laugh and play during her whole shoot (see that one here). I really encourage parents not to skip this happy age!
One year old: I love the excitement that swirls around the one year session! Sometimes parents have special ideas to lend and I try to incorporate lots of inspiration and creativity into these birthay shoots. You can see a “Wild One” session here; that one was so fun to put together!
